Things To Know

What to Bring

Camera, Swimsuit and plenty of energy.  While rental cars, private tours and bus tours are available for your sightseeing activities, a good pair of walking/hiking shoes is very important.  Most all archeological sites will require some walking over rocks or uneven terrain while some require some climbing.  Keep this in mind when packing.  Clothing should also be selected with outdoor activities in mind.  Sunscreen (SPF 30 min) is a necessity and a hat is recommended.  Rapa Nui has little or no air pollution so the sun can be your worst enemy.  Better be safe than sorry. Rapa Nui has mosquitoes and ants so take a good insect repellant and something to control itching, if bitten.  A small first-aid kit (Band-Aids, Neosporin, aspirin, etc) is a useful item.

Weather & Climate

Winds and ocean currents strongly influence Rapa Nui's subtropical climate.  The warmest months are January and February (summer), while the coolest are July and August (winter).  The average maximum temperature is 28C and the minimum is 15C.  While these are actual temperatures, fierce sun can make even the mildest day seem extreme and the winter winds can make it feel much cooler.  The rainy season is during the winter with the wettest month being May, but tropical downpours can occur during all seasons.

Health Concerns

Water is provided by a public service and is drinkable.  Chlorine is added as in most communities and water quality is monitor continuously by local health officials.  If concern still exists, bottled water is readily available from any number of local shops.  If medical assistance is needed, the island does have a hospital and ambulance service.  While not a trauma center, basic medical needs are available.  If you are taking any prescription medications, bring them with you and bring enough.  Only basic prescription services are available through the local pharmacy (Cruz Verde)

Post Office / Postal Service

Postal Services are available at the local post office.  Postcards and stamps are easily purchased and Easter Island cancellation is available.  Postal rates compare favorably with your local services.  Mail can also be received while you are here.  If you need to receive something while you are here, we suggest having it addressed to yourself at Taura'a Hotel.  All mail is picked up from the Post Office, no home/business delivery is available.

E-Mail / Internet Access

Internet Access shops are readily available.  Rates are by the minute and are reasonable.  Most are located in the downtown area.

Telephone / FAX Services

Telephone/FAX services are available through Entel Telephone Office located in downtown Hanga Roa.  Many internet shops also provide telephone services.

Currency

Local currency is the Chilean Pesos.  U.S. Dollars are accepted at most businesses.  In addition, credit cards are being accepted at more businesses.  Visa and MasterCard are the most frequent.  Currency exchange is available through Exchange houses (Casa de Cambio) as well as the local bank.  Current Exchange rates can be obtained from any banking web site or click on the icon "ValorFuturo" below.  Actual exchange rates will differ slightly on the island.  An ATM machine is available.  It accepts only MasterCard and is limited to US$400/day in Chilean Pesos.  Visa Cards can be processed through the bank but a US$2 surcharge applies. It also is limited to US$400/day in Chilean Pesos.  Travelers Checks are accepted at the bank.  A US$10 processing fee is charged.

Vehicle Rentals

To rent a vehicle, a valid driver license is required.  The preferred license is an International Drivers License.  However, some rental agencies accept a valid license from your country.  It is a good idea to check with your selected agency to determine their policy BEFORE you arrive.
